So I splashed out on skincare on Saturday. I started using this really great hair stuff from Lush and thought I'd try out their face stuff too but, well, not so good. I mean, it was fine, all natural, yadda yadda. But oh the difference swanky Clarins stuff makes! My skin has had the late winter blahs but perked right up once I started slatering on the good stuff.

Plus, its soothing, almost meditative, to massage in the milk cleanser every evening and morning. It smells so lovely, fresh but not flowery. And how often does one touch one's face? Touch it with care and gentleness? Its oddly sensual, given how simple a thing washing one's face is.

So, what have I been up to all this time? Well, as I did mention before my disappearing act, I've been hiking. or I was before winter really settled in. No reason to twist an ankle on the ice! I do miss it but, well, my gym is pretty bitchin and keeps me well entertained three or four times a week.

But my best hiking buddy- Maggie- is also my Opera buddy. And, in her own words, "ridiculously over paid" which means she scores us obscenely fabulous tickets for the Met. We've seen Massenet's Manon, Mozart's Marriage of Figaro and Cosi Fan Tutte, Verdi's Rigoletto and last Saturday Saint-Saens' utterly divine Samson et Delila. I'll upload some tracks when I get a chance. Some of my opera stuff is still in the UK but I'm going to be there in mid-March to collect my stuff from Oxford.

In other news, as I mentioned in my Friday post, I've got a new apartment. Its a very cute two bedroom in Brooklyn that I'm sharing with a dear friend. Its about an hour to work on the subway but I've been knitting up a storm and that plus reading makes the time pass just fine. And the seperation of work and home is really nice. Plus, primo people watching :)

Wow! Its been a REALLY long time since I updated. Don't quite know how that happened. I started a new job where I couldn't scam internet time and then I moved in mid-December to a new place where I don't have internet at home. Guess those are my excuses.

Anyway, on to the update! Basically, life has been good. How's that? No real complaints. To quote 'The Man': "Sweet". I'm very into appreciating what I've got at the moment. Lord knows there's plenty to be dissatisfied about with the state of the world. I guess this is just a shout out to everyone and an apology for being out of touch. I promise to be better and maybe actually find the time to post something more substantial! *smooches the flist and assorted others*

Okay, so I'm watching 'Nemesis' and 'Small Victories', the season 3 finale and the season 4 opener of Stargate, respectively. Now, we all know that I have "issues" with Sam. Sometimes I like her, sometimes the way she's written pisses me the fuck off. As there's a fair bit of forced Jack/Sam fake heterosexuality on the horizon, I thought we should all do a bit of a reality check.

Exhibit A, Carter's hair in Nemesis. Notice the unfrilly if slightly overlong for a soldier hair.

Now, Exhibit B, Carter's hair in Small Victories. She's stuck on a random planet for NINE DAYS and her hair's all perky and curly and a couple of shades blonder!

Now, this is (a) obviously bad continuity editing between seasons and (b) a harbringer of things to come. Ick. Now, in Biblio's story Deja Vu Sam makes the observation that she has a "reverse Samson thing" going on where the longer her hair gets, the stupider she gets. See where I'm going with this? Oh, and her season four hair? Its suspiciously similar to her season 9 hair.

... Its even permed! Badly. Oh the horror!

Has anyone else seen the new ad for the KY self-warming 'massage gel and personal lubricant'? The wife character reads out the name and the guy is all like 'oh really...' And the tagline is something like 'see what happens'. Is this or is this not an invitation to anal hanky-panky? I mean really: would a little subtlety kill these people?

ps- huge apologies to everyone I haven't replied to or kept up with (which would be everyone). A crazy bat of a boss plus a killer attack of the flu have pretty much done me in :(

pps- three bombs went off in Delhi today but thus far it seems as though no one I know was affected. Jeez, my part of the world is just a disaster these days!

So, lilithilian requested photos of my trip. I haven't got ones of me and my mom yet but thought I'd post some pics of the place where we stayed. The Mohonk Mountain House was founded by a pair of Quaker brothers in 1869 and is located about 20 minutes from New Paltz, NY, in the Shawgunks mountain range just south of the Catskills.

I've really gotten into hiking recently and have done a fair bit of hiking in the area. Its accesible by bus from New York which is key as I don't know how to drive! I know, I know. All I can say is that I'm a true New Yorker: we don't need to know how to drive, we have subways!

Anyway, here's a picture to give you a sense of what the area is like. The combination of forest, hills, rocks and cliffs is great for putting together hikes over various terrains and for various levels of hikers.

The ridge in this picture is pretty characteristic of the area. The slope is really beautiful, nah? Lats time I was in the area, we climbed up to the top of one of these plateaus up a rockface- so cool!- before exploring the ridges and the forest between.

Mohonk itself is a sprawling complex of buildings with a hotel, a spa and lots of conference facilities.

There's a museum, stables and so on, all arranged around a gorgeous lake:

The weather was pretty wet but Mum and I werethere to spend time together as much as anything else so it was okay. And the mist winding through the trees has a beauty of its own. So, a good time was had by all. Though I do wish it would stop bloody raining. I'm going to be VERY grumpy if I can't go hiking tomorrow :(

In other news, there was a horrible earthquake in Pakistan (no family members were hurt, thankfully) and my mom and I went on vacation for three days and failed to kill each other. In fact, it was actually a big lovefest. Gotta love the great outdoors! Have I mentioned that my hiking gear looks like it came straight out of Stargate Atlantis? Yeah, I have a blue Rodney-esque shirt and another one like Wier's red one and the hot little zippy things that Shep's wearing all the time. Obsessed? Moi? *snort*

Battlestar Galactica Season Finale

So, the Battlestar Galactica Season Finale was a SERIOUSLY scary episode. VERY good. But its taken me since Friday to get over it. The horrors of war and all that. Its really rare that a show will actually confront that stuff. I was really impressed by their guts and am dying to see how they'll deal with these issues when the show starts up again in January.

How's that for spoiler free?

In less traumatic news, burningchaos sent me her Atlantis and Stargate icons and, um, well, I'd say I had at least half of them, probably more :)

Also, how much do I love 'Firefly'? A whole lot, that's how much. Can't wait for the movie :)

ps- I'm working fulltime these days and will be for the next month or so. I'll be checking my email but will probably be quite slow in commenting and replying. Many apologies. All is well. I just don't want to be on the computer any longer than necessary. Ah, the horrors of data-entry!

So, just saw 'Prototype', the first part of last week's Stargate SG-1 doubleheader. And, well, I still say Daniel needs some serious anti-depressants. He's snarky and hot but, well, he's just bitter all the time. No likey. I would recommend Effexor or Cymbalta. Works a treat.

Um, how hot is Daniel at the beginning of 'The Fourth Horseman Part 1'? Smokin'! We need more tanktop wearing sweaty Daniel Jackson screencaps in the world.

And the evil!Jaffa going over to the Orii? Ha! I knew he was an opportunistic bastard but a religious experience? How like George Bush :)

Can I just say that Ishta's successor, all she ever bloody says is 'The Council should recess to consider Garak's proposal'. Go kick his ass woman! You're a fraking Amazon!

Bra'tac actually declaims properly in this episode. He's still got the passion that Daniel's character seems to have lost. I like him. And Teal'c. And not just because he's hot. Yes, I finally figured that out. What can I say? I'm slow.

And little!Orlin :) How cute. And I really like the music they associate with Orlin. Its so melancholy and...wait...no, wait...Sam/Orlin OTP! How cute are they? He draws her out, makes her gentle somehow. She's just as smart but she's softer, less driven, or maybe just less defensive. And Jack? I've never seen him do that. I...like her again.

And again with the evil doers = religious nuts. I likey. Evil doers suck power by sapping will power and rational thought out of believers. Hmm. Sound familiar? Bush, bin Laden, and such?

And Garak's sooo evil. Is he crazy? Well, the whole going glowy thing resolves that question.

Hmmm. Stargate seems to be getting back to the "meaning-of-life" stuff that is the reason I love sci-fi so damn much.

You know that phrase, it never rains but it pours? Yeeeaaaahhh...that's my life right now. So yesterday it seemed like it was just my dad. But no. My Mom's gone off the deep end too. Freaking out about getting my leave of absense, about how I'm doing, ABOUT WHEN I SHOULD DO THE LAUNDRY. Oh and apparently all the "stress" has been interfering with her work.

Its a bit much that I'm the one recovering from depression and I'm calmer and more rational than her. Oh, and today I went to my therapist and discovered that my mom's been calling her without telling me and freaking out about how much time I spend on the net and about the Oxford thing. Great. Just great...

I called her on it when she got home and she apologized but...Its just sad that she's almost sixty and she can't manage her own anxieties and keep them from making her behave stupidly. Oh and she needs to tell my father to go to hell. Apparently he's been emailing her three or four times a day just to keep the heat turned up. Fucker.

So, my dad is fraking with me. Seriously. I'm taking a leave of absense from my PhD at Oxford. I need to spend some serious time devoted to my recovery from depression. There was a fair bit of paper work since I left in the middle of the third term. But taking a year off is super easy. All I have to do is not register for the new year and write letters to my department, supervisor, etc. to let them know.

My father, who has no affiliation with Oxford of any kind, has been telling my mom that I need a doctor's report and so on. Now my mom, while wonderful in many ways, is a rather anxious person. She's afraid that the university is going to charge me money and all this crap. Now, I can tell her what the deal is but she'll still be anxious about stuff and need constant reassurance. And my dad's comments are not helping.

He knows what he's doing too. He did this when I wanted to go to Oxford in the first place. Basically threatened to out me to my mom if I didn't do what he wanted me to do. And I haven't been in touch recently and he's clearly feeling in need of attention, and thus he's decided to FRAK with me.

Aargh! And he wonders why I've had to cut him out of my recovery process for my own sanity.

burningchaos did the Happy meme and, though she didn't tag anyone, I thought I would do it too. I don't think I'm quite up to 10 but here goes. This is really more of a "Things I'm grateful for" meme :)

1. Music, I'd die without it. And the people who feed my addiction are a huge part of that. *smooches lilithilien and noorie and my guys at NYCD*

2. Being outside. I really envy my friends who live out in the countryside. I love New York and I know I'd be frustrated anywhere else but I miss living in the country like I did in Oxford. I try to spend as much time as I can in the parks and by the Hudson and get out of town as often as possible.

3. My Gym and Yoga classes. No matter how down I'm feeling, moving my body reminds me of how far I've come in the last several months. Its a feeling of accompishment to see my body becoming more flexible and stronger. Even if my mind is still a bit of a shambles, I'm still doing things.

4. My mom. She and I had a horrible relationship and I'm more grateful than I could ever express that our relationship has improved so drastically in the last few years. My recovery would be infinitely more difficult were it not for her.

5. Being happy. Cuz there was a while there that I had forgotten what joy felt like.

6. Being able to love. Its hard but I have to believe that love will save me. And the people I love are a huge part of that.

7. My livejournal and flist. I've met some amazing people here and its helped so much to keep me afloat and from being completely numb. And its introduced me to new writing, music and, well, slash :)

8. Sci-fi. I really believe that sci-fi is the last great genre of fiction left, the only one where humanity's dreams and anxieties are played out in full. Modern fiction has gotten so afraid, so small, even when the books are bloody long. Sci-fi isn't afraid to ask the big questions about the human race.

Um...I think that's it for now.

Tonight's SG-1 episode:

Messy, snarky Jaffa politics! Danny in the leather jacket! Evil Ba'al in a killer suit! Squeeeeeeeee

Aw, fanboy Cam just passed out new badges. Cute. Plus they seem to have solved the two colonel issue by splitting Sam and Cam up. And Cam and Teal'c seem to be making a good team together. And CIA guy is SO hitting on Sam. But what's the 'not exactly' when he asks her about whether she's single? Eeewwww. Its the dreaded het of Sam/Jack. Crap. Why can't the writers just give that up and get her a real job. She was so much cooler in the earlier seasons. Sigh.

Oh and did I mention Daniel in the leather jacket? Cuz its so hawt :)

And the Baal quadruplets? Ha! That's going to be fuuuuuuuun. I love how the symbiot is so in love with his current body that he's cloned that too. And there's scruffy boardshorts Ba'al, ravenous Chinese food eating Ba'al, investment banker Ba'al and polo shirt uber gay Ba'al. Actually, they're all pretty gay. Let the scary ass sex orgy fic commence!

And on Atlantis...
More afflicting of Rodney by small children. He's just a magnet for the little buggers, isn't he? Well, they do have so much in common :)

And Shep just whacked him upside the head for ebing a whiny arrogant ass. Hmmm. Rodney will probably get a concussion if people do that too often :)

Aw. The McShep communicating via head nods and blinking is so cute.

Oh and Ronan getting all glowy cuz he gets too ~~moon over~~ take care of Teyla is equally 'awwwww' worthy.

Plot? There was a plot to this episode? Hmmm...maybe Wraith girl can be Ford's new girlfriend :)

Um, so I finally am seeing 'Trinity' and OH MY GOD. This is the most SEXUALLY CHARGED EPISODE EVER.

First, Teyla and Ronan. Wow, he GLOWS when she's around. Its so cute. And then Ronan finds his people and people think Teyla's his wifey: Brown people in lurve :)

Second, wow, yeah, John and Rodney? They are flirting to such a massive degree as to be bloody CANON. Its amazing. John is so cute when he grins at Rodney's enthusiasm and then Rodney and Zelenka get all giggley which science geek glee. Awww....

And, yes, its pretty bloody obvious what's going to happen at the end in both storylines but whatev...

ETA: I'm so glad Radek outsmarts Rodney for once. McKay can be a bit over the top- especially this episode- and, well, pride fall goeth, etc.

ETA 2: When Rodney says, "I won't let you down", I just shudder. Pride, fall, etc.

ETA 3: Ronan and Teyla have a sekrit :)

ETA 4: Wow, Rodney. You blew up a SOLAR SYSTEM. The word 'hubris' mean anything to you? Can't WAIT to see his grovelling tonight. His joking at the end was stupid but, well, some tough love from John would probably do him some good. So there.

Finally saw last week's SG-1 episode: "Beachhead". Hmmm, certain things occur to me...

1. Cameron Mitchell has a cute accent. Yes he does. And he doesn't irritate me. He can stay.

2. The writing is getting snappier and, lo and behold, there seems to be a serious attempt at getting to the point of this season. The Jaffa angle is being developed with lots of politics and angst. And the tenets and therefore the point of the Orii are becoming clearer.

3. On the other hand, it was really, really obvious that the forcefield shield was going to be fed by any energy that went into it. As was Vala's solution to the whole 'Supergate' issue. D'uh. And what is this anyway? The Vala show? Still, Daniel croaking 'lucky me' and being all glowy in the infirmary was cute.

Oh, and the 'Orii are truly gods' is getting really tired. And Garak, like so many Go'ould, looks totally constipated. And Daniel's basic role seems to have been reduced to rehashing old speeches and telling Vala to shut up. And he actually said 'we need to think outside the box'. Stuuuupid. Which leads me to my next point...

4. Daniel Jackson. See, I'm a big Danny fan. Jack leaving? Sam getting crimped hair? Doesn't really bother me. Kerry Johnson, the skank how slept with Jack the Ho, is of course another question. Neither Daniel nor Sam deserves that. And I get the heebie jeebies everytime someone mentions Sam/Jack. And have you ever noticed how she's always the top in the slash? Its the only thing I like about that pairing.

Anywho, since the beginning of season 9 I've been having, let's call it existential angst about teh Danny, made all the more painful by the contrast with the season one reruns at 6pm every weekday. It all sort of came together for me with this week's episode. Specifically during the aliens vs. humans basketball game. There was this exchange between Daniel and Vala and I just went 'Huh. He's just a guy.' Because once upon a time, not so long ago, Daniel was special. Hell, even in the diner scenes in 'Threads' he was still the same person as before. Older, harder, less wondering at the world but still Daniel. Still sincere and honest and brave. He would totally have chosen death over ascension if it was the right thing to do.

These days? He's just SO bitter. Is it not going to Atlantis? Not getting laid enough? Jeez, maybe that's it. Even at Vala's trial, he seemed to be going through the motions. Is it the writers? Compare Daniel's defense of Teal'c or Linea in the early episodes or the way he negotiated mining rights with the Unas or how he worked out who the merry fat man in the diner was and just how sick the Ascended were to let the galaxy suffer in order to punish Oma by making her watch Anubis fuck shit up. There's a moral courage there that just shines through. By contrast, Vala's trial was very disappointing. As though all she did on that planet were just icing on the cake where Daniel's irritation was concerned. Snippy comments and pinching artifacts? Extracting forced labour from a population to make some money off their naquada? No difference of degree is made between her actions nor is it ever even hinted that some deserve irritation and others disgust and outrage. So its no wonder that his 'Daniel speeches' come across as tired and forced. Is he supposed to be some sort of pissed off faux McKay? There still working where his character is at this season out, clearly, but I hope it doesn't take much longer. *looks at watch*

And now the long hard slog to download last week's SGA 'Trinity' from wirehog. burningchaos, the sweetheart, was going to mail it to me but I just realized that yahoo won't let me receive anything that big. And given how long it will no doubt take her to UL it and me to DL it, well, three and a half hours should just about cover it, allowing me to use on of my favorite proverbs: 'six of one, half dozen of the other'. Have you ever noticed how most things aren't worth bickering about? Leads to unnecessary stress. *ponders*

Hi all! So I survived camping quite well. We slept in a tent on the beach and had a beach fire and a pony ate some of our food on the last day! My friend Neerja and I went to Assetegue National Park, which is on one of the barrier islands along the ocean side of Chesapeake Bay. All in all, very exciting. The beach is incredible: smooth white sand and the ocean is just magnificent. Our campsite was set back a little from the beach, behind the dunes. The mesquitos were not pleasant but they pretty much leav e me alone so I was okay. Neerja was suffering. I slept pretty well but she was up most of both nights. Apparently I would wake up, be incoherent and go back to bed :) In addition to the gorgeous beach, the park is famous for its herds of wild ponies. They're a bit smaller than most horses but very cute. And they're really used to people so they have no fear. Thus the eating our food incident. See, the campsite is sourrounded by a fence but these are some very clever ponies and they often manage to open the gates and go foraging! We were loading up the car on our way out and came back to find a pony had knocked our cooler off the picnic table, opened and had begun tossing things around! He eventually went away but not before eating our After Eights (chocolates) and veggie sausages. A bottle of beer also went missing...

Post camping was taken up with hanging out and playing with Neerja's iBook. I want one so bad! They're so cool and modern and...COOL! I want one SOOOOO bad. *rubs hands together and schemes*

I did unfortunately miss SciFi Friday *shock! horror!*. I've dl'd SG-1 (Beachhead) and will watch that tomorrow. burningchaos has sucked me into Wirehog and I will download Atlantis (Trinity) when it won't take 49 hours to dl :) And I can pretty much guarrantee two weeks worth of picspam as the result :)
